Workshop on “Development Strategy of International Master Programme in Forestry in the Lower Mekong Region”

From 23 to 24 October 2017, Vietnam National University of Forestry (VNUF) in collaboration with DAAD, Goetingen University, The National University of Laos and the Royal University of Agriculture organized the workshop “Development Strategy of International Master Programme in Forestry in the Lower Mekong Region”. The aims of the event are to assess the one-year implementation results of The Master Program on Tropical Forestry and develop the strategy for the program.

Attending the workshop, there were Dr. Stefan Hase-Bergen (Director of DAAD Vietnam), Dr. Dominic Stanculescu (Vice Director of GIZ Vietnam), Dr. Amphavanh Kouangmanivanh (Counselor of Laos Embassy), Dr. Simone Pfeiffer (The University of Goetingen), The delegations of The National University of Laos and The Royal University of Agriculture Cambodia, Prof. Pham Van Dien (Vice Director, International Cooperation Department, MARD), Representative of Personnel Department MARD. On the VNUF side, there were Prof. Dr. Tran Van Chu (President); Assoc. Prof. Bui The Doi (Vice President); Leaders of the Graduate Training Division, International Cooperation Division, Faculty of Forestry, Faculty of Forest Resources and Environment Management, lecturers and students who participated in the program.

In the opening speech, Prof. Tran Van Chu warmly welcomed the delegations to attend the workshop and he expected to receive the contributions and opinions of experts and scientists to develop the program in the near future.

Under the support and cooperation of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and two German universities (University of Gottingen –UGOE and Technical University of Dresden - TUD), the International Master's Program in Forestry has been implemented at the VNUF since 2016, for the first cohort with 15 students from six Asian countries (Bangladesh, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Pakistan and Vietnam). The program is taught in English and by a team of professors and experts from VNUF, Germany, Laos and Cambodia. The master students have been regularly invited to international seminars, academic events conducted by experts from the United States, Australia, Japan, Germany, Canada, South Korea, Taiwan etc,.

At the workshop, Dr. Stefan Hase-Berge (Director DAAD Vietnam) highlighted the importance of the International master program in tropical forestry in order to provide qualified human resources for the forestry sector in national and international level. In the development orientation of the program in the near future, he emphasized that the university needs to focus on integrating practice contents in the training curriculum. He believe that with the strengths and unique of the program which is the first trans-borders program in the world and the first master program taught in English in Vietnam, VNUF will continue to attract more and more both national and international students.
